At The Grove, we believe support and accessibility go hand in hand. Although our doors are always open, we understand that not everyone has the ability to access the support they need.
At The Grove Palmerston site, we noticed that we needed to create an alternate opportunity for out youth to utilize Grove services during the summer months. It became apparent that youth had limited access to transportation and were unable to use their facilities and services; something needed to change.
The Grove Palmerston Team leader, Tiffany, and Youth Ambassadors Caden and Emma recognized that we needed to minimize this accessibility issue. “In small towns, it can be hard for youth to get into town,” they explained. While during the school year, they spend their time in the town centre, during the summer, they are confined to their rural community without means of transportation. The ‘Sub Hubs’ program brings the services, programs and activities of The Grove Palmerston site, to various locations in the surrounding rural community.
Created by youth for youth, The Grove Palmerston found it essential that site locations were placed with intention. Working with the youth, the team asked what locations would be the best for the Sub Hubs in their communities. Furthering their accessibility efforts, transportation was made available as well. ‘Ridewell’ services will be bringing youth to the Palmerston hubs all summer long. In collaboration with the community, the team expresses their gratitude for the “amazing community partnerships that allowed this to happen.”
This incredible program has been an amazing success so far. Tiffany, Caden and Emma explain that with Sub Hubs, youth are able to access outreach workers and clinicians, as the program “minimizes the barrier of transportation to care.” The Grove Palmerston are delighted to see that “youth are excited to have us in their towns,” and are encouraged to see young people who have not had the opportunity to see the Palmerston Hub, having access to the same support.
At The Grove Palmerston, we listened and recognized the challenges the youth in their community were facing when looking to use The Grove’s services. The goal was to make accessing support a barrier-free experience, and Sub Hubs do exactly that. By promoting ongoing attendance and engagement, they connect youth within rural communities to the support and services they deserve to inspire and improve personal wellness.
